Take Heart Foundation and Hot Shots Basketball NYC Bring Inclusive Basketball Clinic to Life for Children With Developmental Disabilities
Ridgewood Queens, NY — May 30, 2026 — Sometimes the most meaningful victories aren’t measured on a scoreboard, but in smiles, laughter, confidence, and belonging
That spirit was on full display as children with developmental disabilities from Kindergarten through 8th Grade participated in Take Heart Foundation’s inaugural Basketball Clinic, presented in partnership with Hot Shots Basketball NYC. What unfolded was far more than a sports program—it was a reminder of what becomes possible when a community comes together.
Children practiced dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic basketball skills, but organizers said the real focus was confidence, friendship, and belonging. Every basket and every effort was met with cheers from coaches, volunteers, families, and peers.
Community volunteers played a major role throughout the day, assisting coaches, supporting participants one-on-one, and helping ensure every child felt included.
“The energy in the gym was incredible,” said Frank Sardinas, founder and head coach of Hot Shots Basketball NYC. “Every child gave their best, supported each other, and reminded us what youth sports are really about. They were absolute rockstars.”
For Take Heart Foundation founders Eric and Graceann Faulkner, the clinic carried deep personal meaning. The organization was founded out of their experience raising their daughter, Christina, who has Down syndrome, and their commitment to helping provide access to inclusive athletic programs that have been beneficial to her development and wellbeing, ensuring children of all abilities are able to fully participate.
“Our mission is simple: every child deserves the opportunity to play, belong, and thrive,” said Eric Faulkner. “What we saw was a community come together to make that real.”
Graceann Faulkner added, “We are deeply grateful to our coaches, volunteers, families, and especially our donors and sponsors. None of this happens without them. Their support creates moments like this—where kids feel seen, supported, and celebrated.”
Organizers said the event highlighted the importance of inclusive programming for children with disabilities and the impact of community-based support systems.
The Take Heart Foundation said it plans to expand similar programs in the future.
